This book traces the development of the West Virginia Army and Air National Guard from the creation of the first unit in 1735 through it's service in the Civil War, its use in coal mine and railroad strikes, service on the Mexican Border, in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia and up to its extensive service in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also relates the Guard's role in aiding West Virginians in numerous domestic crises including floods, truckers' strikes and the prison riot of the 1970's.
